Lafayette Farmers Market at Purdue

A Downtown Lafayette institution for over 170 years, the Market is located on Fifth Street between Ferry and South Streets.  From May 1 through October 30, the market will be open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 7:30 am – 12:30 pm, in downtown Lafayette.  “Because of the popularity of the Lafayette Farmers Market with patrons and vendors we have expanded to the Regions Bank parking lot on 5th Street between Columbia and South Streets for the Saturday market. On weekends and evenings, visitors will be able to park in the parking garage for free and visit all of the vendors along 5th Street. We are very excited to have more space so we can offer the best variety of locally grown food and handmade crafts to our Farmers Market patrons. Be sure to visit all of our vendors!” says Dennis Carson, Director of the Downtown Development Council.

On Thursdays from 3:00 – 6:30 pm vendors will be selling in the Dauch Alumni Center Parking Lot at 403 W. Wood Street on Purdue University campus.  “Having the Farmers Market on the Purdue campus was a huge success. We are excited to partner with the historic Farmers Market and offer fresh, local produce, meats, cheeses, flowers and handmade jewelry and art to Purdue faculty and students for the entire Market season,” states Michelle Wing, Human Resource Project Specialist with Purdue University.

Fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, kettle corn, free range farm fresh eggs, flowers, honey, maple syrup, jams and jellies, dried herbs, baked goods, soy candles, Traders Point certified organic whole milk, Fair Oaks cheeses, perennial flowering transplants, arts/crafts, roasted coffee beans are all examples of items available at selected times during the 2010 Market.  The Market season runs through October 30, 2010.

In addition to new vendors, expanded Market area and a full season at Purdue University there is another change to the market this year, no pets. “The Farmers Market must operate under Municipal Code 4.06.050 which prohibits bringing our furry, four legged friends to the Market.  In the best interest of the sustainability of our Market and for the health and safety of everyone involved we ask that our Market patrons please leave their pets at home. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping us keep the Historic Lafayette Farmers Market a safe and healthy place,” comments Erin Nelson, the Program Manager with Greater Lafayette Commerce who oversees the Farmers Market.

Regardless of the day or time, a visit to the Lafayette Farmers Market promises some of the finest and freshest produce and unique products and crafts, as well as an enjoyable opportunity to browse as you stroll through downtown and Indiana’s oldest Farmers Market.

In addition, the Sagamore West Farmers Market will be in operation on Wednesdays from May 5 through October 27 from 3:00pm to 6:30pm at Cumberland Park.
